Job Description:
A secondary responsibility of this position will be to serve as a
community library for the Red Lake Nation reservation community.
This will involve outreach and public relations in welcoming the
community into the Tribal College library since it will serve as a
dual purpose Tribal College and Local Community Library. An
additional support responsibility of this position is to direct the
activities, development and protection of the Tribal Archives
collections of the Red Lake Nation Tribe. The Tribal Archives
aspect of this position will eventually become a completely
separate position with additional and separate management,
administration and fundraising duties. ACCOUNTABILITY: This current
position will report to the VP of Operations & Academic Affairs of
the Red Lake Nation College and will also keep the College
President closely informed of all Library and Archives operational
affairs. Since the Tribal Archives are located in the Red Lake
Nation College, this position will oversee the Tribal Archives
until further notice. Eventually, a new position will be developed
for separate Library and Tribal Archives activities. Currently, the
Tribal Archives aspect of this position will require that the
College President and the Tribe be kept informed of all aspects of
the Tribal Archives operations.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential responsibilities and duties
may include, but are not limited to the following: 1. Direct the
activities and development of library collections and services in
order to support the mission and educational goals of the Red Lake
Nation College. This includes supporting faculty and providing
information literacy training to students. 2. This position
involves grant writing and seeking book collections and funding for
community libraries.
3. Work will include intense collaborating with colleagues, Tribal
staff and faculty, Tribal officials and community members while
promoting the library and college, and serving its learning
community with collections and services. 4. Since part of the
mission of the Tribal College is to promote and encourage Ojibwe
language use, this will be a major operating goal of the community
library. 5. Serve on committees and assist the VP of Operations &
Academic Affairs in collecting and organizing information as
necessary for accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission. 6.
Another key responsibility of this position is to serve the Red
Lake Community with library services to children, students,
community members and elders. 7. Writing grants and active
fundraising to support all of the major responsibilities are also
required. These efforts will include working with current RLNC
staff to coordinate all fundraising efforts. 8. The Director of
Tribal Archives & Community Library Services is generally
responsible for providing library service and access, managing the
overall operations of the library and archives, communicating and
collaborating with colleagues to direct and develop library
collections and services, and serving the college learning
community and the greater Red Lake community.
9. Direct the activities, development and protection of the Tribal
Archives collections of the Red Lake Nation Tribe. 10. The Tribal
Archives aspect of the position will involve working through the
College President for all aspects of communication, management and
administration of the Tribal Archives. This will be to ensure close
communication and cooperation with the Tribe and the Community.
Like all Tribal College communication, all communication with the
Tribe will first go through the College President.
11. Other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS: 1. Master's Degree in Library Science
(MLS), or Library and Information Science (MLIS) is required for
this position.2. Previous experience in library management is
highly preferred. 3. Teaching experience is preferred. 4.
Experience managing administrative projects and events. 5.
Knowledge of library technological systems and software. 6.
Previous grant management experience preferred. 7. Knowledge and
understanding of Anishinaabe culture and history. Knowledge of
Tribal Archives is also ideal.8. Red Lake Tribal Member and Native
Hiring Preference applies. SKILLS/ABILITIES: 1. Strong verbal and
written communication skills. 2. Outstanding public relations and
human relations skills. 3. Ability to assume a leadership role and
to multi-task. 4. Ability to remain calm and patient when under
duress. 5. Willingness to initiate and carry out complex tasks with
or without supervision. 6. Team player who can work with diverse
populations and personalities. 7. Excellent communication skills
with supervisors and keep supervisors well informed of all
sensitive Library and Archives issues. 8. Understanding of and
commitment to the Red Lake Nation College Mission and Vision
statements. SALARY: Negotiable. Depending upon qualifications.
EDUCATION: Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS), or a Library
and Information Science (MLIS) degree from an American Library
Association (ALA) accredited program is required for this position.
